Fun and rewarding for the Arrowsmith team to be part of the Get Coloured fun run by CanInspire at Lake Hood today. So many people having a good time. Well done to the organisers. A privilege to be involved. https://www.caninspire.org.nz/
Arrowsmith Law 2.0 - New Year : New Premises. We are looking forward to welcoming clients, referers, and partners to our new offices on the ground floor at 163 West Street, Ashburton. And a big thank you to all the contractors who worked so hard over the Christmas break to get the place looking (as you can see) so sharp. A great way to start 2019!
Many thanks to Pam and Mark Waite of Rivers South Safaris for hosting us for our Christmas 2018 get-away. So good to spend some time in Mackenzie Country.
Congratulations to the Hakatere Heritage Committee, Mt Somers District Citizens Association. A wonderful afternoon up in the Ashburton gorge for the hand-over to DOC of the restored historic stables. Arrowsmith Law was honored to be asked to help out in a small way. A pleasure to be part of an iconic and meaningful project. Well done to those who did the hard hot work over the summer.
Christmas 2017. Arrowsmith Law firm picnic on a Thursday evening at the Ashburton Airport. Evening flights over Ashburton and Mid Canterbury for anyone who wanted to try their hand at being an aviator. Slow-roast pork followed by chocolate mouse for desert. A great evening and a super end to a really awesome year. Thanks to all those who have supported us - clients, business partners, and friends of the firm. A well earned break follows for the Team. 2018 is going to be even bigger and better and more breath-taking. We're looking forward to being of help to anyone who is prepared to trust us with their important life-matters. You will not be let down, and will be valued for ever.
7 June 2017. Thank you to all the fantastic people of Mid Canterbury who have supported us during our first year in business. It has been breathless, and breathtaking. To celebrate we went up to the source - Mt Arrowsmith - for a glass of champagne. What a mountain. What a day. What a team. What a year. Thank
you all. And thank you Mt Hutt Helicopters for an epic Monday morning out in the High
Country. Great way to start the week.
I took a great photo of Mt Arrowsmith looking up the Rangitata a few years back.
My objective had been Growler Hut, several hours up the riverbed track from the DOC car park at Mesopotamia.
It turned out that my trusty Suzuki quad bike didn’t have the grunt for the job. About five kilometres in, the whole flow of the Rangitata came south west into a bluff to my left, and then swung south east again out into the braids. To get to Growler I would have to get across.
A brief wade out and it was clear that I wasn’t going any further. I went back to the quad bike and had an early lunch sitting looking up the valley, Mt Arrowsmith up ahead. One day I’d get up there. I put aside my sandwich and took the photo.
On a good few occasions over the years I have thought about starting a new law firm in Ashburton. I had some ideas about how lawyers could do things differently; in looking after clients, and in building a team who enjoyed what they did. The starting point was the idea that lawyers are in business, just like everyone else. And the fundamental question that all people in business should ask themselves every day is: if we are not making a positive difference to people’s lives, then why are we in business? I was therefore keen to bring this idea to a services industry that sometimes looses sight of that fundamental.
To constantly and effortlessly make a positive difference to peoples’ lives you need a team who wants that outcome. Building such a team was the second challenge that I thought would be fun to take on. Law firms in my experience often end by being laterally competitive, and vertically hierarchical, and even sometimes feudal. The real reason for being in business gets overwhelmed by fear, and the billable hours obsession. I wanted to start something different. Time will tell if we are a success, but the more important thing is that we should have fun trying. And it has already been great fun setting up. Yes, we’re through the river and on our way. I sincerely hope you will join us for the adventure.
